When I was a young woman, I heard a well known psychologist on the radio say that when a woman considers marriage she should contemplate whether or not her future husband will be a good dad. That made sense to me and so I did examine your attributes, in that regard.
The decision to marry you because I loved you wasn’t a stand alone reason. You have proven your devotional love for me for over thirty five years with unceasing loyalty. I have been the recipient of care and dedication to my needs and joys. But, the grateful heart lies also and equally in your steadfast commitment to our children.
You have worked tirelessly all of your life to ensure the well being of your family. The pressure has been off of us while you have taken the helm of responsibility for each one of us.
You are the unsung hero when we shine; the behind the scenes contributor of love and support that requests no glory. For all you do for our lives in motion, I wish you the happiest Fathers Day, Dearest Brian.

The Rest is Mumps and Measles
On earth, there are holes in souls that cannot be fully filled until God and His original design is restored in all our intended glory with Him in Heaven and on the new Heaven on earth. However, fruit is the natural result of relationship now, with God and others. The command, then, to love one another, given to us by Jesus, provides us with the closest to the sublime, attainable at this present time. The rest is mumps and measles. It really is about love.

Know Why You Knock
The Lord directs us to keep on asking. Keep on seeking and we will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened. Why did He say that? Why did He make that promise of God?
Directly before Jesus said these words (Matthew 7:7), in Matthew 7:6, He said, “Don’t waste what is holy on people who are unholy. Don’t throw your pearls to pigs! They will trample the pearls then turn and attack you.” Of course, the logical question would follow, how can we distinguish who not to tell?
That’s why it is comforting that Jesus then says, in the very next sentence, that God will give us the wisdom. Ask. Keep on asking…for the wisdom. Persevere in your pursuit to know God. Continue to ask Him for knowledge, patience, wisdom, understanding and love and He will give them to you.
In the entirety of our walk in light, we need wisdom and knowledge of God. I speak specifically now, though, of our need to discern. We have been instructed to make disciples and toward that aim, we need wisdom. There are people, you need to know, that will forever reject the Word. Indeed, there are those with whom we are directed to not share the treasures of salvation. They may even ask you questions but only with the intent of tearing you into pieces. Their minds are convinced and their ears are closed.
Jesus chose not to respond with any words to Herod (Luke 23:9). Amen.
Next, Jesus speaks of the practical. He speaks of bread and how, if your own child asked you for bread, you would not give that son or daughter a stone instead. If you ask your Father for bread, you will likely get the bread and more when you seek Him and continue asking.
Many have taken this to mean that we can ask God for anything. Do you want the high rise across the avenue? Claim it. God will deliver. Well, no, sorry Joel Olsteen and Joyce Meyer. This promise was given to disciples. We are disciples. But, what makes a disciple? Jesus tells us that a disciple follows Him, takes up the cross, gives up self and walks in His light. Once a person does that, it’s amazing how prayers change.
When you move from one kingdom to another, you are not praying any longer to fulfill your carnal and temporal desires. Become an authentic disciple and your needs will not be the same as when you were not a follower. And, they will be different than the needs of the slickest prosperity gospel preachers with their mansions, jets and insane wealth. The televangelists and new divinistas don’t resemble the original disciples. They do disguise themselves as angels of light, that’s all. Trapping souls by knowing a lot of the studied doctrine and how to twist some of the key elements is their skill. Not divine skill. Just skill.
So knock, but know why you are knocking.
I Know How The Story Ends
Dear Children,
Natalino, Samantha and Adrianna
I know how the story ends. That’s why I speak to you with such assurance on a most considerable matter. We all have the knowledge now of our eternal placement. The gift of knowing that our lives are en route into forever in light remains the utmost revelation from God; one in which He was pleased to directly disclose.
Having said that, of course, still, I possess no prophetic gift to know how your lives will unfurl here. I can only discern, from scripture, that you will strive and strain to some degree, at some points in your lives, at the very least. It’s with sureness; none of us; believers or not, are unfamiliar with this actuality. So, I write for the love I have for you.
Thus, the Word guides us in ways while we reside on earth. First, set your hope on the reality that any suffering you have right now pales to your place in eternity. The hard truth is, Christians often act least like Christians when we suffer. Please don’t let that be true about you. When we suffer it should shine most brightly that we are followers of Christ. You have been chosen, saved and redeemed and crave the Word so let it transform your approach here.
Let’s say, hypothetically, you find yourself in the midst of financial, circumstantial mishaps. Your car needs sudden, costly repair. You lose your job. Your wallet with a good amount of cash is lost. Your cat needs imminent surgery. It all happens within a couple of days. Then, you get a phone call from an attorney saying that you are the sole heir of a one billion dollar fortune due to the last wishes of a distant cousin. The only catch is, you can’t get the check for three weeks. Do you say, “Well, that’s a drag? Who cares, then? If I can’t even get my hands on it for three weeks. I can’t look forward to that? My hunch is, that is not how you would react. Your financial stresses would likely begin to dissipate and a peace would come over you, even if the furnace blows and the roof caves in the midst of waiting. Yet, we do profess to believe the promise God offers but often find no peace in it while we are here, though our future is determined.
Our character in faith is something that must be in focus and applied. Am I suggesting that you never weep? No! Jesus wept. We lose people we love. We lament over illness. Our hearts break. I don’t want you to misunderstand. The point I emphasize is that we can become despondent and forget our hope. With our devotion and minds, however, we can rise and the unbearable can become bearable after the tears.
You have your own peculiar temperament and that doesn’t change because you’ve been converted. We have certain things about ourselves unique to ourselves that we may have to work harder on than others. But they have their difficulties, too. We also need to watch our strong points. Those can lead us into soul trouble, as well. Peter had a great quality in his energy, right? His strong distinction also meant that he was quick to speak. Not one of us is able to say we have been born without weaknesses or even strengths that can outdo us. We all have dispositions with which we must contend. Peter had his own to work out and remember that Paul actually had to rebuke Peter in public. I chose an apostle to make my point. None of us are exempt from these matters of ourselves.
1 Peter 1:6-7 reads, “In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith-of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire – may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.” I am so grateful that our Word is so real. Pop psychologists and even some pretty good false teachers in the name of our faith, are telling us that we should seek our constant happiness because we deserve it, you know. We’re able to live without struggle. It’s not true life. There is a definite purpose to our trials that ultimately will be proven to be more valuable than gold.
We have finite minds. That’s why even with the life that waits, the struggles we encounter now can still be overwhelming. So, steadily look toward Him. Seek an incredible nearness. Our struggles can be designed to make us more like Christ. Our human minds can have a hard time wrapping our arms around that doctrine when we are in the midst of suffering. The more continual your walk with the Lord, the less pain will be as a catalyst for spiritual depression.
The precious character of faith is eternal and everlasting. It links you to God. It trades hell in for heaven. The process God puts us through strengthens that faith. The trust element needs to be strengthened. That trust is exposed when your love for the Lord is in light even when the sun is not shining. We don’t like this but the evidence from scripture is that God put many of His ambassadors through great tests and trials. Joseph. Job. All of the Apostles. David. Abraham. And, on and on. We’ll know the deep reasons at another time but it is the way we endure trials that certifies our faith. Saving the worst of it for last, we may have to endure more, not less, than those of no faith. We are in the hands of our Father. Remind yourself that if you did not have Him, as an orphan, you could have less in the way of trials because He would not be intervening in your life; directing, correcting, testing and ultimately strengthening you for His glory. His ways are not our ways and we will be reveling in the reward of it all.
With All Love,
Mom
Churn Your Knowledge Into Love
Dear Daughters,
Mix your knowledge with your love. Search the scriptures to know of God and to examine yourself. Be humbled by the Word and apply it to your lives.
The author of Hebrews is resolute when speaking to Christians who may have been considering a departure from their faith, due in part to their immaturity. The force of the direct point could not reasonably be mistaken.
“There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen. You have been believers for so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong. Hebrews 5: 11-14
Earlier in Hebrews (4:14), the listeners are asked to hold firmly to their faith. And it does follow that if you are to hold firmly to your faith, you should know what constitutes your faith. God seemed to have breathed into the Word here and elsewhere that, as followers of Christ, we need to have both the knowledge of the scripture and signs of life from the scripture. The two essentials are essential to one another.
That is, knowledge of the Word is fundamental but that knowledge without intent of application to one’s life is futile. The Bible isn’t intended to be read mechanically. When it is read without purpose, it becomes on equal plane with any secular subject. And even so, when studying a secular subject, let’s say… photography, you would be diminishing your experience if you didn’t mix your knowledge with function. It’s one thing to read about the technicalities and artistry of taking photographs. With certainty, you could dialogue about your understanding of the process but without a camera in hand and the actual act of making pictures, there will be limitations to your growth. Likewise, if you buy a camera but learn nothing about exposure settings and editing, your proficiency can remain dull.
Combine compassion and truth. Study the time Jesus engaged with the Samaritan woman at the well. There you will find an exemplary example of the blending of compassion and truth. At that time, also, Jesus made a profound offer. If we drink His water, we shall never thirst and we shall be sprung into everlasting life. How can we read something that compelling in a perfunctory way? Or, for that matter, how could we express our zeal for this life from God, life anew, without studying from where it was written?
Being a follower of Christ is not a mindless walk down Lollipop Lane. We must make time to examine ourselves and grow in the wisdom we have achieved through the study of the Word and apply, apply, apply.
In Romans 2:17 – 29, Paul speaks about the hypocrisy of having knowledge of the law and scripture but not living accordingly. He emphasizes that a change of heart produced by God’s spirit is above adherence to ceremony. It’s important to know scripture but unless it has taken root in your lives, it is a book on the coffee table.
Love,
Mom
My Pre-Genesis 3 Sparkle
I believe I have some historical memory of a divine life. I think we all do. When we struggle and yearn, even during the best of times, we seem to have some trace sparkle of our pre-Genesis 3 heritage and realize that we are not home.
